Video-editing, neo-thatcherism and the strategy of tension (GR)

The following article was published in the “Avgi” newspaper political analysis supplement, in February 3, 2013.

An evening with Van Rompuy

European Council’s President Van Rompuy visit to the EUI was a joy to behold.

The guy came to the Institute supposedly to give a lecture on Europe’s perspectives. Nevertheless, in his half-an-hour speech the only interesting thing he said was that ‘Italy needs reforms, not elections’ (!). When Collettivo Prezzemolo raised their DEMOCRACY? banner and asked to make an intervention, Van Rompuy ran away (from the back door!) and the organizers invited the participants to a cocktail party.

Here’s the video from the protest.

So numerous were the negative comments made by the EUI community members, with regard to Van Rompuy’s back-door runaway, that the administration unofficially changed its policy on inviting guest speakers: from now on, every speaker will have to participate in a debate if re...

Glovatron is an interactive artwork by Myrssini Antoniou, Vesela Mihaylova and Sotiris Katsimpas, exhibited at Ars Electronica 2010. I had some involvement in conceptualizing and script-writing.

Watch the promotional video for more details 🙂  – we shot it in a burning hot Thessaloniki (mid-August, 45 degrees), under the guidance of our wise director, John Akis.

Collettivo Prezzemolo vs. Schauble, 07/03/2012

The students, workers and researchers at the EUI had a great opportunity to confront the German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble, during his visit at our institute.

We formed a small “welcoming committee” upon his arrival, then put on our pig masks and brought forward a couple of questions on Greece, the Eurozone and the crisis.

As expected, his answers were both irrelevant and boring.

Conciatori eviction: crackdown on the commons continues

Article written by Donagh, Frank and me, on behalf of Collettivo Prezzemolo.

It was published on ROARmag, Jan. 20, 2012.

Post image for Conciatori eviction: crackdown on the commons continuesThe eviction of the oldest social center in Florence this morning is yet another instance of a worldwide crackdown on public space and civil liberties.By Frank O’Connor, Markos Vogiatzoglou and Donagh Davis

This morning, Florence witnessed the most recent instance of the international clampdown on public space and civil liberties. The city’s oldest and historically most important social center, Progetto Conciatori, in the heart of the Santa Croce neighborhood, was forcibly evicted by the Italian police.

The expulsion brought to a close thirty-two years of cultural, social and political activities that had rendered Progetto Conciatori a beacon of autonomous civic org...

EastBordNet Conference, 2011: Framing the mirror

Together with the good friends and colleagues Myrssini Antoniou and Markos Zampoglou, we presented in the EastBordNet Conference, 2011 (Catania, Italy), a paper on Myrssini’s artwork “the Mirror”. We also exhibited the artwork itself during the conference.

Title: Framing the mirror: tracing the boundaries of narrativity in interactive media

Authors: Antoniou Myrssini, Vogiatzoglou Markos, Zampoglou Markos

Abstract: This paper will discuss an interactive installation, first presented in Athens, during the 15th AntiRacist festival, 2010. The installation is a digital “mirror” hanging on a wall, reflecting the spectators that stand before it as different people of random gender, age, race and social status.

Our theoretical analysis, which includes the projects’ setup and the feedback it...
